Family Photo Tips

It’s that time of year again. A lot of families are preparing to take professional pictures for holiday cards. We recently took our first professional family photos with our 4 month old daughter, and I was at a loss for what to wear. In the past I would just find a picture that was taken that year from a special event like our wedding photo, vacation photos, or my sister’s wedding to use for our holiday card. This year I scheduled a photo shoot with a professional photographer. I did a lot of research online to figure out what to wear. And here are the top 5 tips I picked up for what to wear for your family photos.

 Amelia Dress, Odell Booties

1. Coordinate your colors. No matchy-matchy. You can stay in the same color family or wear different colors that look well together. I wore an olive green dress (similar to the one above) with brown boots, my husband wore a dark tan button up with jeans and brown shoes and my daughter wore a cream and pink outfit. With a huge pink bow of course. ; )

Betty Dress, Challenge Boots, Black Matte Bracelet

2. Limit patterns. Simple is best. It’s ok to use patterns just not too many. I think this Johnny Was Betty Dress would be a great pick. Everyone else in the photo could coordinate around this. Have someone wear a dark blue sweater and jeans, another in a light blue button up, and someone else in a pink dress with black accents. And no words or characters on kids clothing, as it can be distracting.

Nadine Dress, Odell Booties, Pyrite Cross Bracelet

3. Try to avoid all black or all white. It can be tricky to photograph. If you would like to try that look make sure you have some fun accents. All black with brown boots and a colorful scarf. Or all white with a bright sweater and fun shoes. This Rails tunic would be adorable with booties. Have other members of the family in other colors like mustard yellow and shades of dark grey.

Big Screen Sweater

4. Try to be timeless. Don’t be too trendy with your outfit picks. This wine colored sweater is very classic but still fun to wear with the slight high low look. Fringe is so in right now but so was crazy acid wash jeans in the 80s. The only thing that should date your photo is your hairstyle! lol. You know what I’m talking about.  Talking to you mom and that huge backcombed, permed, overly hair sprayed hair from the 80s! ; )

Burgundy Beauty top, Freshwater Pearl Bracelet, Mila Excel Dark Denim, Well Known Grey Flats

5. Consider your background. Don’t blend in with your background. You would blend into the background if everyone was in green with green trees in the background. This outfit above would be perfect for an outdoor setting. This burgundy top would pop against a background of trees anytime of the year!

And don’t forget to smile! : )

The crew neck t-shirt dress has cute black stripes throughout the soft knitted body. When paired with gold gladiators, this look is perfect for hitting the town. We especially love the fringe details on the Oakley Cross Body purse.

Day Look #2

For cooler days, try pairing the Stone Dress with medium wash jeans. A single tuck at the waistband creates a new fun outfit. Make this look even more fashion forward with trendy leopard espadrilles.

Night Look #1

Top: Stone Dress Jacket: Lace Rider Necklace: GF Matte Fancy Bar

To transition into evening, we choose a light jacket that makes a statement. The Lace Rider leather jacket has a gorgeous back that features oversized flower cutouts. The lace detailing allows the rich bordeaux colored dress to peak through.

Jacket: Lace Rider

Transitioning from day to night is made easy with a t-shirt dress. The trick is to find items that are eye-catching, and then to pair them with staples (like a great pair of jeans). Check out our New Arrivals to view the items featured in this post.

Hot Spot Highlight: SUR

If you are a fan of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or the spin-off show, Vanderpump Rules, then you are probably familiar with the popular restaurant, Sur. Nestled in the heart of West Hollywood, this ultra chic place is sure to provide you with plenty of entertainment.

IMG_1244 IMG_1275

I was lucky enough to be able to dine at Sur last Friday night for my friends’ birthdays, and as a huge fan of Vanderpump Rules, I was not disappointed. Shades of purple and pink light lit up the entire restaurant, creating an ambiance that could only be designed by Lisa Vanderpump herself. If you find yourself dining at Sur, I highly suggest sitting on the back patio. It was nice to have fresh air, but the tree cover made the patio so comfortable, especially with all of the twinkling lights woven through the branches.

Flowers were all over the bars and tables, which made the entire restaurant smell so heavenly!

IMG_1250When one is dining at Sur, it is only necessary to order a bottle of Lisa Vanderpump’s LVP Pink Sangria. Served over ice with fresh raspberries, LVP sangria was absolute perfection.

For dinner, I chose a chopped arugula salad topped with tomatoes, olives, mozzarella cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette. This was the perfect choice to accompany my sangria and dessert. As if the sangria wasn’t sweet enough, we just had to order dessert! Because we were celebrating two birthdays for the twins Mimi and Laura, they got a very special chocolate cake. I also highly recommend the “Lemonchamp,” a tasty scoop of lemon sorbet ice cream floating in some bubbly. What could be better!

After dinner, we took a little stroll around the lively West Hollywood, and we ran into Pump! The other restaurant, also designed by Lisa, was just around the corner from Sur. Although we were not able to dine there, Pump also looked like the perfect place to relax and enjoy the evening.

The overall experience at Sur was amazing, but one of the most difficult things about that night was trying to figure out what to wear. If you’re looking for that perfect going out outfit, here are some of my favorites from PB&J Boutique:

Outside Lands 2014 Adventures

SummerPBJThis past weekend, we drove three hours out of Chico to the beautiful City by the Bay, San Francisco. As a work retreat, the Ladies of PB&J spent two days at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival listening to great music and hanging out with wonderful people. The days were beautiful and the nights were a bit chilly, but that didn’t stop us from having the time of our lives. Some of our favorite performances were Arctic Monkeys, Tom Petty, Local Natives and Disclosure. Take a look at some of our amazing adventures.
